Discover the remarkable stories of the Wainstalls Waifs and explore the places where they lived and worked.
Don your walking boots and join WCAG for a journey into Waintstalls’ Past!
Bookings are now open for Wainstalls Waif Live Narrated Pilot Walks, exploring the remarkable stories of more than 250 young girls who were brought from Liverpool to Wainstalls in the late nineteenth century to work for the Calvert family in their textile mills.
There are two different walks, each lasting approximately two hours. You are welcome to book either walk or join for both:
- Walk One: Why the Waifs Were Here
- Saturday 5th September 2026 – 10am till 12pm
- Walk Two: How They Lived
- Thursday 10th September 2026 – 1pm till 3pm
Both walks start from The Spinning Top, by the Wainstalls turning circle, and will include around two hours of walking and live narration led by WCAG member and local historian Kim Pearson. Kim has carried out extensive research into the Waintstalls Waifs and will bring their stories to life through the places connected to them.
These are pilot walks, helping to test the two routes and narration and gather feedback before developing them further. The wider Wainstalls Waifs Programme aims to commemorate the Waifs’ history permanently through two self-guided walks, which can also be followed as on combined route, with audio interpretation and information boards in Luddenden Dean Graveyard and along the walking routes.
- Dogs are welcome, but are asked to be kept on leads or under close control.
- Places are limited to 20 people per walk and will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis.
- A minimum donation of £10 per person is aksed, per walk, with all donations supporting the continued development of the Wainstalls Waifs Programme.
To book your place, please email wainstallscommunity@gmail.com stating which walk you would like to attend and how many places you require.
You will receive a reply with payment details and further information.
