As an organisation, VAC is proud to be part of such a culturally rich and diverse borough like Calderdale. Through both the local Voluntary Sector and NHS, Council and Emergency Services partners we work with, Calderdale demonstrates daily how our local communities are built on a foundation of unity and respect.
We have observed the recent events happening up and down the U.K. with a heavy heart. There is absolutely no excuse for the level of violence, racism and hatred being demonstrated and fuelled by misinformation. Understandably, this is also causing an increased amount of distress and fear for community safety, again leading to a heightened response to local rumour.
Calderdale is the borough it is today because of the people, organisations and businesses that call it home.
To help our communities stay safe at this uncertain time, we have compiled a list of information and resources:
- We strongly urge that organisations contact emergency services immediately if any staff, volunteers, or beneficiaries experience abuse, feel threatened, or are in danger.
- Report hate crimes and hate incidents. https://new.calderdale.gov.uk/communities/equality-and-diversity/hate-incident-reporting-centres
- Check in with your staff and volunteers to see how they can be supported, especially those who may be vulnerable.
- Review and confirm your organisation’s lockdown procedures with all members.
- Stay informed by regularly communicating with your service users, staff, and volunteers. Keep an eye out for important updates from local authorities.
- Be mindful of what you post on social media and corroborate it with a reliable and credible source before sharing.
- Remain vigilant
