The Home Secretary has announced plans to introduce a volunteering “test” for migrants applying for indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
As a sector, we would not exist without volunteers, and these volunteers come from all walks of life, from every age group and every community. We know contributions made to this country by migrants is enormous and varied, and we are proud to count those seeking sanctuary amongst our volunteers. These contributions are valuable precisely because they are offered freely. VAC believes these contributions must remain freely given and never in any way enforced.
Making volunteering compulsory undermines the very ethos of volunteering, i.e., it is voluntary. It could undermine the benefits to both individuals and communities were people to be forced to work for free, at risk of having their hopes of a new life in this country denied.
We urge the Government to review this plan.
National bodies raising concerns about this proposal include NCVO, NAVCA, Reach Volunteering and The Royal Voluntary Service.
VAC will continue to offer support, kindness and understanding to all those who wish to volunteer in Calderdale.
