The Anchormen, a UK registered charity based at The Savage Centre in Elland, are embarking on a mission to restore their cherished building.
Originally founded as a marching band in 1904 and then part of the 5th Halifax Boys Brigade, The Anchormen are one of the oldest Drum Corps in the UK. They once paraded the cobbled streets of Elland, delighting the local community.
In 1932, the then-captain of the Boys’ Brigade, Harold Savage, built the Harold Savage Hall adjoining the Elland Wesley Church to provide a dedicated practice space for the band.
However, following the eventual closure of the Wesley Church, the property was sold to Nu-Swift. Generously, Nu-Swift allowed the band to continue using the space.
During the sixties, The Anchormen achieved significant success, winning numerous championships, performing at the Royal Albert Hall, representing England at an International Musical Festival in Denmark, and even playing in front of the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. In 1974, they competed in the first national Boys Brigade Championship, securing this victory six times over the next seven years.
In 1989, Nu-Swift decided they no longer had any use for the premises and offered the site to be purchased by the Anchormen for the cost of £15,000. The community rallied together to raise the initial deposit and by 1995 the final mortgage payment was made.
Today, the Anchormen take a different approach and have laid down the instruments and now run three successful dance teams for children between the ages of 6 and 16, keeping elements of their musical heritage and incorporating colour guard flags into their performances.
Led by a small team of dedicated volunteers, The Anchormen have ambitious plans to repurpose and renovate their building for the wider community.
The building, once a vibrant hub for musical talent, friendship, and international competition, now requires significant refurbishment.
Tony Lees, who began performing with The Anchormen at age 12, is now a key figure in the charity. He hopes to see the band revive its musical roots and restore Elland’s marching band to its former glory.
The only major renovation to the Savage Centre in the past decade was replacing single-paned windows with double glazing.
While this upgrade improved energy efficiency, it inadvertently led to ventilation issues, resulting in excess moisture and mould.
The vision for the Savage Centre extends beyond its current state.
The Anchormen and their team of volunteers are determined to see the building teeming with life across all its floors envisioning a multi-purpose facility offering spaces for various activities and programs.
The Anchormen have been based in Elland for 120 years and are now relying on their community to join them in their efforts.
Volunteers are currently seeking solutions and applying for funding, but would greatly appreciate new members with fresh ideas to join their board of trustees.
The Anchormen, firmly rooted in Elland for 120 years, are now calling on the community to support their efforts. Over 100 children and adults pass through the doors of The Savage Centre every week, and with community backing, The Anchormen hope to secure a bright future for their historic organisation.
